The Stones of Hope

In August of this year, KLPR signed a long-term lease for half an acre of agricultural land in Sungai Long, Cheras. We had known for a while that running a humble rescue service and homecare was inadequate to meet the needs of the canine community. Our intention was to build a facility that set a new standard in animal care in Malaysia.

The centre we had in mind would have two parts: an emergency department that was able to house, rehabilitate and rehome victims of injury and abuse, and a boarding section that would generate the income required to sustain our rescue efforts.

KLPR floorplan

The lowest quote we received came in at RM261,462.
Just for the structure, not even to fit it out!

(builder's details have been blacked out)

Unsure of how we would be able to raise the funds but certain that this had to be done, we took a leap of faith and borrowed a large sum of money to begin construction.

4/12/2012

Consistent bad weather has put us way behind schedule and the earliest estimated date of completion is the end of December. The place is finally starting to look like what we imagined, which is a great comfort! That being said, we are appealing to animal lovers EVERYWHERE to help us open the KLPR centre not in debt, but with sufficient financial backing to start our operations in full swing.

From Saturday 8th December 2012, people will have an opportunity to "buy" bricks for our centre at RM100 (USD$33) a piece. Once you have purchased your brick, decorate it in whatever way you wish to honour the memory of your closest animal companion, living or deceased.

Your brick will form part of the walls of our centre for as long as it stands, a proud witness to the contribution you have made.

This Saturday, the KLPR team will be at
The Markets (outside The Bee), Jaya One
to launch our campaign. Thereafter, we will post details on how to purchase bricks online.

If you believe in our cause and would like to see us do more for Malaysian pooches, please - buy a brick.

These are the Stones of Hope on which we will create a better future.

iPhone for you, aShelter for us!

actual phone

Mamma KLPR (aka Mrs Lam) recently upgraded her mobile handset and has donated her previous model iPhone as an auction piece for our new adoption centre! The shiny black iPhone 4 is less than a year old and has been handled with great care since she bought it. In fact, there is NOT A SCRATCH on its panels.

Apple Malaysia only have the iPhone 8GB available to buy new at RM1449. Mrs Lam's iPhone is the top-of-the-range 32GB model, which used to retail in Malaysia for RM2588. We are starting the bidding at a paltry RM500.

The bidding war will commence on
Saturday 1st December 2012 at 12:00 midday
on our Facebook page.
It will close one hour later at 13:00.

The person who places the winning bid will be able to collect their iPhone complete with charger and inspect it thoroughly before paying. Proceeds go towards the construction of the KLPR adoption centre, so please bid fairly and squarely!

Totes for Tyson

Meet Tyson, a young street dog that was reported by neighbours to be swaying dangerously by the side of the road. We captured him the same day and saw that he was shaky and disorientated, tripping over his feet. To our relief, clinical tests were negative for distemper. The bad news was that he had extreme tick fever and parasites had destroyed almost 80% of his blood.

After two and a half weeks of hospitalisation and slow progress, Tyson's condition suddenly worsened. He stopped being able to eat or drink on his own and, four days later, looked like he was at death's door. His emaciated, bed-ridden frame was covered in sores.

We rushed Tyson to a different vet for a second opinion. This time, the distemper test came back positive. We called around frantically for a clinic that was willing to house a distemper patient and checked him in immediately.

Tyson has been in an isolation ward since July 11th. A drip hydrates him and nappies keep him dry. The vets turn him twice a day to prevent further bedsores. Because he is too weak to move, they help him sit up and syringe food into his mouth. We are assured that he is not in great pain and his enthusiastic eating is encouragement that there is still a small chance he may pull through.

His daily requirements:
* drip with antibiotics
* soft food
* cleaning and light physio
* antiseptic cream for bedsores
* immune boosters

To help raise money for Tyson, the wonderful ladies from cattery and adoption centre Pet Epicure have donated eight fashion pet carriers for us to auction off via our Facebook page.

All are new, but a few are worn and marked from their time in the shop (we will detail the imperfections accordingly).

The photo album of available totes will be launched on
12:00pm Tuesday 24th July 2012
at

Bidding will continue until 12:00pm Thursday 26th July 2012.

Please be generous - Tyson's bill so far is 888RM and climbs 65RM per day.

See you at midday tomorrow!

    Victims of profit

    One of our groomer friends has an acquaintance who used to own a pet shop but had to close it due to illness. Like many pet store owners, he also bred dogs for sale and kept a shocking forty plus dogs in cages out the back. Some of these he gave away but many were left for months with debilitating skin conditions and inadequate food.

    Our friend made room in her grooming salon to house over a dozen pooches, making sure to include the worst cases. As overloaded as she is, she has asked us to assist with medical treatment and rehoming.

    KL POOCH RESCUE has already found homes for two of the dogs and four more are ready for booking.

    Spare a buck for Bobby

    Six weeks ago, we received an alert from independent rescuer Teresa that there was an old dog with a badly infected ear chained up in one of her neighbour's compounds.

    Bobby had been in a fight and his wound was swollen, rotting and infested with maggots.

    When she urged the owners to take him to the vet, they refused to listen. They said they would "settle it", leaving Teresa fearful that they intended to put him down or dump him somewhere.

    We had our hands full with another rescue but advised Teresa to take the dog to one of our participating vets for treatment, after which we would help her raise funds for Bobby's cause.

    Towards the end of treatment

    All better!

    Bobby healed slowly but surely. After thirty-five days of clinical care, Teresa managed to find a new home for Bobby and he was discharged!

    The total bill was 1252RM
    KL Pooch Rescue is determined to raise 1000RM for Teresa to reward her commitment to animal welfare and to encourage her future ventures.

    Please give by visiting our Make a Donation page. Remember to code your contribution "BOBBY".

    KLPR has landed!

    Anyone who has visited our homecare in the past year can attest to how challenging it has been to live with up to twenty pooches in a link house in the suburbs. Whether it is 2pm or 2am, there is always a mess to clean up. As for noise - our neighbours are accommodating only because we bribe them regularly with chocolate and soothing words!

    That is why we are over the moon that we have finally found a piece of land to build our very own adoption centre. Located conveniently in Sri Damansara, the acre plot will be the site of a modern sanctuary that will rehabilitate injured and abandoned dogs till they are ready for new families.

    In a completely separate building we will offer top-of-the-line boarding facilities for dogs that include spacious pens (no cages), an above-ground pool, a gym with imported canine treadmills and an agility course. All proceeds from boarding will go towards the adoption centre and our rescue efforts. So owners who travel can pamper their pooches and help save lives!
